Weatherization and Energy Efficiency Improvements

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, historically each dollar spent on weatherization returns about $1.65 in energy savings and an additional $1.16 in non-energy benefits to households, ratepayers, and society.  Making homes 25-50% more efficient could reduce total US emissions by 5-10% and save the average homeowner hundreds to thousands of dollars per year.

Federal Energy Efficiency Tax Credits up to $1,500 are now available making this work more affordable than ever.  See www.mdhomeperformance.org for more information on incentives. These incentives won’t be offered indefinitely so go green and save green without spending a lot of green!

Types of improvements could include:

  • Air Sealing:  Finding and sealing the cracks in your home increases comfort and reduces energy loss.

  • Proper Insulation:  You will be surprised at the gaps and inadequate insulation levels typically found in a home.

  • Lighting Improvements:  Lights and appliances account for 10-18% energy usage.  Installing a daylight can reduce that amount substantially and bring the warmth of natural light into the heart of your home.

  • Reduction of Water Use

  • Furnace Upgrades: Heating and cooling comprises 36-60% of a home’s annual energy.  Older furnaces and air conditioners can be very inefficient and may need to be upgraded.

  • Appliance Repairs and/ or Replacement:  Refrigeration averages 12-17% of a homes energy use.  If your refrigerator or freezer is old you may want to upgrade to an energy star model.  We sell Uber-Efficient Refrigerators which are ultra-efficient refrigerators/freezers that use approximately 180 - 280 kw hrs/year (a 40% reduction versus the standard).

  • Window Replacement:  Single pane windows can be big heat loss offenders.  We will evaluate your windows as part of the audit.

  • Ventilation: Ventilate your attic using the sun with a solar powered attic fan.  A solar panel is directly connected to a fan.
